Christmas at the Movies: Week 5 (Dec 31st)

For the month of December, we will be taking a break from our study of the book of Luke to spend some intentional time examining the major themes within several prominent Christmas movies. Below is the list of the movies and themes that we will be focusing on. If you haven’t seen all of these movies, challenge your group members to watch these movies and be prepared to discuss how each movie speaks to the main questions being asked each week.

  • This week’s focus is the movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Can I Change?) Below is a brief summary of the movie:
    • In this live-action adaptation of the beloved children’s tale by Dr. Seuss, the reclusive green Grinch (Jim Carrey) decides to ruin Christmas for the cheery citizens of Whoville. Reluctantly joined by his hapless dog, Max, the Grinch comes down from his mountaintop home and sneaks into town to swipe everything holiday-related from the Whos. However, the bitter grump finds a hitch in his plans when he encounters the endearing Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen).

For this week of this series, spend time discussing the following questions:

1. Why do you think people struggle with the belief that they can change or be changed?
2. How has your relationship with God changed the way you think, act, talk, etc? What have you learned about yourself over the holiday season that you need to change in order to be more like Christ?
Spend time reading the following passages to answer this question:
  1. 2 Corinthians 5:17
  2. Romans 12:2
  3. Ezekiel 36:26
  4. Ephesians 4:22-24
  5. Titus 3:5
