Christmas at the Movies: Week 1 (Dec 3rd)

For the month of December, we will be taking a break from our study of the book of Luke to spend some intentional time examining the major themes within several prominent Christmas movies. Below is the list of the movies and themes that we will be focusing on. If you haven’t seen all of these movies, challenge your group members to watch these movies and be prepared to discuss how each movie speaks to the main questions being asked each week.

  • It’s a Wonderful Life (Do I Matter?)
  • A Christmas Story (Can I Be Happy?)
  • Polar Express (Christmas Eve)
  • How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Can I Change?)
For the first week of this series, spend time discussing the following questions:
1. Why are movies so popular in our culture?
2. Why do we love Christmas movies so much?
Make sure you spend time discussing how the themes in movies tend to reflect our views of the world. Also, think about how movies include major characters (protagonist v. antagonist).
Do your group members tend to resonate with characters in movies or empathize with their life experiences?
When you reflect on the popular Christmas movies, do you think they point us to the true reason for the season?
How does our culture view the holiday season as compared to the biblical accounts of the birth of Christ?
How can you use the main points of the sermon to help others see Christ in the movies?
